U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch To Address NARM Convention
The National Association of Recording Merchandisers (NARM)
has announced
that U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT) will deliver the keynote address at
the
Annual Meeting & Business Session of the 2002 NARM Convention &
Trade Show
featuring the Association for Independent Music (AFIM) on Monday, March
11
at the San Francisco Marriott.
"As the former Chairman of the Senate Judiciary
Committee, and the Committeešs current ranking Republican, Senator Hatch plays an active
role in the Congressional debate over the digital distribution of
music," says NARM President Pamela Horovitz. "He has spoken of the need to
review the increasing legal tension in the high technology industry between
intellectual property rights and antitrust laws, an issue of utmost importance to our members. His personal experience as a songwriter and
recording artist also gives him a unique perspective on our
industry."
Now serving in his fifth term in the Senate, Orrin
Hatch has championed a variety of legislative causes. Shaped by a strong conservative
philosophy, he has battled an expanding bureaucracy and burdensome and costly federal regulations. His achievements and initiatives have
included the balanced budget amendment, tougher anti-crime laws, civil justice
reform to unclog the courts, legislation to protect individual property rights,
welfare reform, the Job Training Partnership Act, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, and the Ryan White AIDS Care legislation, providing
needed
services for adults and children afflicted with HIV.
NARM serves the music retailing community in the
areas of advocacy, networking, information, education, and promotion. The Association's
more than 1,000 members include retailers, wholesalers, distributors, and
suppliers of products and services. NARM has joined with the Association
for Independent Music to blend AFIM events into the 2002 NARM Convention
& Trade Show.
