NARM Releases Its Second Classical CD Sampler,
A Classical Odyssey

The National Association of Recording Merchandisers (NARM) announces the release today of its second Classical music CD sampler, titled A Classical Odyssey, in celebration of the Classical Music Month (April).

With a suggested retail list price of $1.98, the sampler is designed to broaden the listening base of Classical music, introducing it to younger, newer audiences while maintaining the integrity that traditional Classical listeners demand. Artists chosen for the sampler are younger, developing performers in the Classical genre who have been receiving press and critical acclaim. The affordable price also represents the value that younger consumers want and the music gives them the eclectic experience they desire.

Other efforts to entice more diverse buyers to this compilation include the art and composition of the CD insert. Under the direction and design of Gordon H. Jee and Edward Odowd, the insert contains brief descriptions and reviews of each piece. Executive Compilation Producer Mark Forlow adds a special note to music fans, urging them to “explore the wealth” that Classical music has to offer and encouraging them to disregard the intimidating plethora of choices and terms.

The sampler is being distributed by Naxos of America and manufactured by Wings Digital. It features 15 established and emerging artists — including Kennedy, Andreas Scholl, Natalie Dessay, and Lang Lang — performing over 65 minutes of Classical music.
The sampler is a collaborative effort by the Classical/Jazz Issue Forum of NARM .

A Classical Odyssey is the successor to NARM’s 1999 Classical music CD sampler, which shipped approximately 70,000 copies in the United States. NARM is encouraging prominent in-store and online placement in the pop as well as Classical sections, including listening stations.  Project coordinator Holly Rosum, who is Director of Membership and Public Affairs at NARM, expects the 2001 sampler to be an even bigger success. “The Sampler has turned out to be a remarkable illustration of how diverse Classical music is today,” she noted.
