Statement On IFPI Sales Figures
NARM
is issuing the following statement by President Pamela Horovitz in
response to today’s release of the IFPI’s mid-year global music sales
figures, and analysis, which reported recorded music sales down by 5% in
the first half of the year 2001:
“American
retailers have also anecdotally been reporting soft sales on music for the
first half of the year, though NARM does not publish mid-year figures. In
evaluating sales patterns, retailers look first at the strength of the
release schedule and compare it to the titles released in the first half
of the previous year. This year, most retailers agree that, except for
’NSync, we are still waiting for most of the big titles of the year to
ship. Second, we would agree with Jay Berman’s assessment that consumers
are engaging in CD-burning and file sharing on a massive scale. However,
we don’t choose to characterize our own customers as the problem. We
think the problem lies with the record companies.
Instead of offering either singles or downloads through legitimate
retailers, they offer neither, and simply increase the price on CDs.
Retailers could have been competing with CD-burning and file
sharing if they had been given the chance.”
NARM serves the music retailing community in the areas of advocacy,
networking, information, education, and promotion.
The Association’s more than 1,000 members include retailers,
wholesalers, distributors, and suppliers of products and services.
