NARM Promotes Student Membership To Future Music Business Pros At NYU
NARM President Jim Donio and Director of Digital Strategy & Business Development Bill Wilson spoke to future music business professionals and promoted student membership in the Association at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts (part of the Clive Davis Department of Recorded Music) on Wednesday, September 16.
Associate Teacher and Internship Faculty Coordinator Lauren Davis asked them to address the “Introduction To The Music Business” class, which provides a framework for understanding the different segments of the music industry. Topics on the student’s agenda include: key players and their roles in generating revenue streams; common creative, business and legal problems that arise in and govern the day-to-day operations of different business ventures in the industry; the operations, marketing, and promotion functions of a record label; music publishing; touring; new business models; and career opportunities.
“It was both affirming and encouraging to spend time with these students since they represent the future of the music business,” said Donio. “NYU’s music business program has gained a terrific reputation. The level of experience many of these young people already have in pursuing a career in the music industry is quite impressive. Their interests spanned the spectrum…performance, production, venue management, artist management, journalism, and label relations…and they asked great questions.”
Donio briefed the students on the history of NARM, its mission, membership profile, current priorities, and key initiatives. Wilson spoke about NARM’s new web site and Digital Think Tank which is focusing on operational data services, data visualization and metrics. He also touched on the expanding charter of the organization as participation from new segments of the digital and mobile communities, as well as social media companies who are engaging with NARM.
“Jim and Bill’s visit far exceeded everyone’s expectations,” said Davis. “My students and I are sincerely grateful for their willingness to share information and readiness to answer a wide variety of industry questions. We look forward to a return visit.”
Student membership in NARM is $25 annually. The application is available in PDF format by clicking here.
