3. Great Slate For Artist Development Seminar

Moderator Geoff Mayfield of Billboard Publications has confirmed a terrific line-up of panelists for the seminar on artist development titled, “Brave New World...Or The Same As It Ever Was,” which will take place on the final morning of the Convention, Wednesday, March 14 from 9-10:30 AM. The panelists are: Marty Diamond, president of the artist management/touring agency Little Big Man, whose clients include Sarah McLachlan, Coldplay, Barenaked Ladies, Dido, and Nelly Furtado; Scot Fisher, manager of acclaimed independent singer/songwriter Ani DiFranco; Tegra Little, Maverick Records’ head of sales; Derek Tenbusch, EMI Music Distribution’s director of artist developement; Greg Thompson, Elektra Entertainment’s executive VP/GM; and Dave Yeskel, sales VP of Clive Davis’ new J Records label. Mayfield, an extremely engaging inquisitor whose previous NARM seminars have won rave reviews, promises a lively chat about how the game has changed, and how it has not.

 4. Music Consumers  Speak Out … And You’ll See And Hear Them

The national consumer focus group research — videotaped excerpts of which will form the foundation for Part II of the Digital Music Super Session on Tuesday, March 13 — has already provided some thought-provoking perspectives from real consumers of varying ages. They have certainly not been shy about commenting on what they’ve been doing online and what they really like about the experience, or ranting about what frustrates, annoys or disappoints them about acquiring or listening to music. Of course, we’ve also gotten lots of terrific feedback about how digital access to music compares to and affects shopping in stores. Don’t miss this Session, along with the presentations by research analysts from Adams Media Research, Arbitron, Cyber Dialogue, Jupiter Media Metrix, and Webnoize on Monday afternoon, March 12.

 5. NARM To Launch Virtual Convention & Trade Show

Watch for NARM’s first virtual Convention & Trade Show to go live early next week. Visitors will be able to get up-to-date programming information, search online for exhibitors and registered attendees by company and individual, and link to sponsors and their sites. Visitors will also be able sign in at a guestbook. As the actual Convention approaches, look for information on the performing artists and speakers. During the actual Convention & Trade Show, consult the site for daily on-site Convention & Trade Show news, bulletins and features.

Companies wishing to increase their advertising exposure via the virtual NARM Convention & Trade Show Web site can contact Naylor Publications at 1.800.879.1107.

 6. Take Advantage Of Sponsorship And Trade Show Exhibit Opportunities

Convention & Trade Show sponsorship opportunities remain and exhibit space at the Trade Show is still available. “For companies seeking optimal visibility, I highly recommend the promotional banners that will hang in the Hall of Cities’ Marble Walkway or the foyer leading to both the Grand and Crystal ballrooms,” notes NARM’s Director of Meetings & Convention Linda M. Still. Sponsors and exhibitors who sign up now will also enjoy increased exposure via NARM’s virtual Convention & Trade Show Web site, which is scheduled to go live the week of February 12.

 8. Peter Frampton To Appear Live At Scholarship Dinner Live Auction

Veteran Rocker Peter Frampton will appear live at the NARM Scholarship Foundation Dinner on Monday, March 12, to help auction a framed 1976 Rolling Stone Magazine cover signed by screenwriter Cameron Crowe (Almost Famous), who wrote the cover feature article on (who else?) Peter Frampton. Along with the magazine, the winning bidder will receive a signed copy of Frampton’s latest CD, a re-issue of his record-breaking Frampton Comes Alive, the best-selling live album of all time. Frampton will be honored that night with a special NARM Best-Seller Award recognizing this outstanding achievement. For more information, contact Pat Daly at daly@narm.com or 856.596.2221.

 9. NARM Fights Connecticut Bills

NARM and the Recording Industry Association of America are seeking to block adoption of some recent Connecticut legislation: SB 229 is aimed at prohibiting the sale of Parental Advisory-stickered product to minors and HB 5375 would require that music catalogs indicate Parental Advisory-stickered product. NARM opposes this burdensome legislation on the basis of its unconstitutionality and the fact that it mandates what is now a voluntary labeling system. For more information, contact Holly Rosum at rosum@narm.com or call 856.596.2221.
