  1. NARM Opposes Designating Limited Downloads As Rentals

NARM has submitted comments to the U.S. Copyright Office opposing RIAA’s efforts to have that office designate limited downloads of music files as rentals. In the comments, NARM noted, “Neither the administrative recognition of a ‘Limited Download’ nor the bootstrapping of such a concept into a ‘rental’ are authorized by the Copyright Act. To do so now would unlawfully expand copyright to include a right over entirely private performances for which copyright owners have no rights, and would deny to artists the reproduction royalties due to them under law.”

2. NARM Outlines Position On The Licensing Of 30-Second Sound Samples

NARM has sent a letter to RIAA emphasizing NARM’s position that no license should be required for 30-second samples of sound recordings if the use of the samples is limited to promotional use in support of sales of those same sound recordings. In the letter, NARM stated, “We believe that the 30-second sampling approach adopted by most online retailers and provided for in the SDMI protocols is entirely reasonable and warrants the unqualified support of our industry.”

9. Fourth Jazz CD Sampler To Hit Streets June 19

NARM’s fourth Jazz music CD sampler, titled "Jazz Now", will be released on June 19. Distributed by Ryko Distribution with a suggested retail list price of $1.98, the sampler offers 15 tracks and more than 70 minutes of music. The title and theme of "Jazz Now" embrace the genre’s new music while still honoring the historical masters of Jazz. “Because Ken Burns’s documentary focused primarily on Jazz’s history, we’re hoping to inspire listeners to collect music of today’s Jazz artists as well as the landmark recordings of Jazz legends,” notes Holly Rosum, NARM’s Director of Membership and Public Affairs and Project Coordinator.
