Outlines Position On The Licensing Of 30-Second Sound Samples NARM
has sent a letter to RIAA emphasizing NARM’s position that no license
should be required for 30-second samples of sound recordings if the use of
the samples is limited to promotional use in support of sales of those
same sound recordings. In the letter, NARM stated, “We
believe that the 30-second sampling approach adopted by most online
retailers and provided for in the SDMI protocols is entirely reasonable
and warrants the unqualified support of our industry.” For a copy of the

2000 Annual Survey To Be Released June 18 The
Annual Survey Results, NARM’s most
valuable sources of industry data and our most frequently requested
statistical report, will be available to members by June 18. Be sure to
look for it in the mail and on NARM’s Web site. -

Tower’s Michael Solomon Joins NARM Board of Directors Tower Records CEO
Michael Solomon has joined the NARM Board of Directors. He fills the seat
vacated by former board member Gil Wachsman who resigned following the

Horovitz Keynotes Dutch Retailers’ Annual Conference During her recent
keynote address to the Dutch music retailers’ annual conference, NARM
President Pamela Horovitz outlined the issues and challenges facing music
retailers in the digital distribution of music. She told the group that
retailers shouldn’t underestimate the power of retail in selling music
and “don’t be afraid to experiment with new product lines that fit the
lifestyles of your core customers.” Click here for the

Lady Of Soul Awards Pilot Campaign Added To Merchandising Efforts The Soul Train Lady
of Soul Awards has been added to the roster of merchandising campaigns
supported by NARM and its members and affiliates. Don Cornelius
Productions is funding this campaign, which features a one-sided, 18 x
24-inch poster that is free to members. The only cost is shipping and
handling of the poster, which can be ordered until June 13. The show will
be taped August 29 and will air on local cable stations throughout the

Campaign Underway Merchandising
materials supporting the 2001 MTV Video Music Awards will consist of an 18
x 24-inch poster, CD divider card and 12 x 12-inch flat. The material is
free; members pay only for shipping and handling. Order deadline for the

And Soul Train Merchandising Display Contest Winners Announced The winners for the
2001 American Music Awards, Grammy Awards and Soul Train Music Awards
Merchandising Display Contests have been selected and posted to NARM’s

Here’s To The Winners NARM congratulates Harvey
Rosen, DNA, who won a free registration to the 2002 NARM Convention &
Trade Show, and Steve Reudelsterz, Photographic Specialties, who won a
free exhibit booth at the event’s Trade Show. The winners were selected
from among those who completed the post-convention surveys for the 2001
Convention and Trade Show. The 2002 Convention & Trade Show will be
March 9-12 in San Francisco, Calif. -
NARM Online At the end of this
month, NARM members should look for a survey that seeks members’ input
on improving the NARM Web site. This survey will be the first step in
making NARM’s online experience more effective in serving members’
needs. - Scholarship 13.
Sound Bites: Foundation Cooks Up Plans For A New Endowment The
NARM Scholarship Foundation is soliciting recipes for Sound Bites, a
cookbook featuring a collection of the music industry’s favorite
recipes. Sales of the cookbook, which will be available during the holiday
season for $20, will be used for scholarships granted by the NARM
Scholarship Foundation. Its goal is to fund a $20,000 endowment. Recipes
will be accepted until June 29. To help out with this fun and worthy
