  2.      Jack Eugster To Accept NARM Presidential Award

Industry veteran Jack Eugster, the retiring President and Chief Executive Officer of the Musicland Group, will accept NARM’s Presidential Award for Sustained Executive Achievement at the March 12 Opening Business Session during the Convention & Trade Show. Eugster, who joined Musicland in 1980, reshaped the product offerings and store configurations of the company, eventually leading it to become the largest retailer of prerecorded entertainment products in the United States.

“Jack’s support of NARM over the years has been steadfast and substantial,” explains NARM President Pamela Horovitz. “His personal contributions as a member and past president of our Board of Directors were complemented by his generous accommodation of a variety of Musicland’s executives participating in NARM’s programs and projects that have helped better the industry. I am delighted to be able to present this Award.”

3.      Frampton To Come Alive For Special Award At NARM Scholarship Banquet

Veteran rocker Peter Frampton will appear live at the NARM Convention & Trade Show’s Scholarship Foundation Banquet on Monday, March 12, to accept a special NARM Best Seller Award and to help auction a framed 1976 Rolling Stone magazine cover signed by screenwriter Cameron Crowe.

The cover signed by Crowe (who recently nominated for an Oscar for his screenplay Almost Famous) features none other than Frampton himself, who was the subject of the article Crowe wrote for that issue of Rolling Stone magazine. Along with the magazine, the winning live auction bidder will receive a guitar signed by Frampton and a copy of his latest CD, a re-issue of his record-breaking Frampton Comes Alive, the best-selling live album of all time. Frampton’s special NARM Best Seller Award will recognize this unparalleled achievement.

4.      Nikka Costa Added To Slate Of Artists

An experienced recording artist and performer, Nikka Costa has been added to the line-up of performers appearing at the March 13 Awards Luncheon during the 2001 NARM Convention & Trade Show. She replaces Oleta Adams, who unfortunately had to cancel.

Performing since the age of 5, Cost is the daughter of famous arranger/composer Don Costa. By age 7, she gained international popularity by performing with her father’s orchestra, and at age 8, she opened for The Police in front of 300,000 people in Chile. As a teenager, Costa moved to Australia, writing songs and touring endlessly before cutting the album Butterfly Rocket, which landed her a nomination for Best New Artist at the Australian Recording Industry Awards.

Her single “Like a Feather” was recently featured in a steamy Tommy Hilfiger commercial. The song is the first track on her Cheeba Sound debut, Everybody Got Their Something, and the commercial reached heavy rotation on MTV and VH1 as if it were a Top 10 music video.

5.      It’s Good Enough, It’s Smart Enough, and Doggone It, Attendees Are Going To Like It!

Be prepared to hear some fresh ideas and spirited debate at the March 14 Closing Business Session’s panel discussion titled “The Convergence Of Art, Commerce And Politics In The Entertainment Industry.” Led by political satirist, author and comedian Al Franken, the talk will focus on how the entertainment industry is being transformed by new technology, new ideas and new business models. Panelists include The Creative Coalition’s Executive Director Robin Bronk; entertainment lawyer Jay Cooper, who is with the firm Manatt, Phelps & Phillips; artist David Coverdale; the Founder and Executive Director of Artists Against Piracy, Noah Stone; and The Future Of Music Coalition’s Executive Director Jenny Toomey, all of whom will discuss the creative, commercial, social, legal, and political issues confronting us all.
