The 11th Annual Independent Music Awards were presented at
a luncheon on October 12, which was emceed by Billboard's Chris Morris. Winners of the
'95-'96 Indie Best Seller Awards were announced, along with the Mickey Granberg Award,
named for NARM's former Executive VP, that recognizes sustained leadership, support and
promotion of the independent music community. The recipient was Alligator Records' Bruce
Iglauer.

Bruce Iglauer, Alligator Records, accepted the Mickey Granberg Award from NARM
President Pamela Horovitz at the Saturday afternoon luncheon.

Iglauer's career reads like a movie script about how the
record business used to be. He started out in music retail in Chicago, then moved into the
label arena. In the 70s, he recorded Hound Dog Taylor, and sold the record out of the
trunk of his car.
"Your devotion to recording and preserving the best of
the Blues, Gospel and R&B is world-renowned," said NARM President Pamela
Horovitz.
A crowning moment came in 1990 with the 20th Anniversary
Alligator Records compilation.
"As wonderful as your success and Alligator's has
been, you saw the need to nurture those without the background or knowledge of what it
takes to make a record, and get it to market," she added.
In 1971, Iglauer was a founding member of NAIRD, and has
served on its Board of Trustees ever since. He has been a strong advocate of the First
Amendment, with an impeccable reputation for maintaining high ethical standards in his
dealings with artists.
In eloquent acceptance remarks, Iglauer expressed his deep
appreciation for being selected for the Award. His emotional and heartfelt recollections
of the role music has played in both the highs and lows of his personal and professional
life truly moved the audience.
