Class Of 2009

The NARM Scholarship Foundation announced the following 21 recipients of the Class of 2009. Winners were selected from a field of more than 100 applicants. The NARM Scholarship Committee judged all entries based on academic achievement, financial need and future potential.

Ahmet Ertegun Memorial Scholarship

A top all-around student at her high school, Dumayne earned a 3.97 GPA in a very demanding honors program while serving as captain of the field hockey and softball teams. She plans to study radiology at the New Hampshire Technical Institute.

Best Buy Enterprise Scholarship

Palm successfully completed an intense, 100-hour EMT training program and she enrolled in the highest level of science courses throughout high school to prepare for a career in medical research. Palm intends to enroll in Boston College and study biological sciences.

Henry Danny Yarbrough Memorial Scholarship

Active in her community, Waggoner was a volunteer junior high volleyball coach and assistant basketball coach at the YMCA. She has been involved in an elementary mentoring program. She will begin her studies in elementary education this fall at Indiana State University.

Henry Droz Memorial Scholarship

Borrisova moved to New York City from Bulgaria at the age of 9, learning English as her third language after her native Bulgarian and Macedonian. Borrisova intends to study International Relations with a minor in French at the University of Southern California.

Joel Friedman Memorial Scholarship

In addition to an excellent academic record, Haisty is active in many student organizations, focusing primarily on community service. She plans to continue her studies at either the University of Arkansas or the University of Central Arkansas with the ultimate goal of becoming a lawyer.

Casal currently studies education and computer science at Dickinson College with the goal if being a screenwriter for television. His college counselor describes him as an “exemplary student and community member.”

NARM Board Of Directors Music Education Scholarships

Reh loves to play the piano and compose music, and has played in recitals, concerts, talent shows and even played a variety of his own pieces at a local farmer’s market. He is planning to study music in conjunction with either linguistics or chemistry at the University of Montana.

NARM Classical/Jazz Issue Forum Scholarship

Thompson maintained an excellent academic record and was a varsity golf letterman for four years. He was also a member of the National Honor Society and participated in many of his church’s projects. Brett will begin studying mechanical engineering this fall at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.

Ka’s counselor describes her as a student “who cannot be classified merely by her academic supremacy; she is also a central contributor to our school and neighborhood communities.” Ka will study biology at Brandeis University for a career in medicine.

Trans World Entertainment Scholarship

Fortman graduated second in her class of 164, was a member of the National Honor Society, and a member of the Honor Societies for Science, English and Art. She served as co-captain of the varsity cross country, outdoor and indoor track teams. Fortman will be studying environmental engineering at Cornell University.

William G. Owen Memorial Scholarship

Graduating 28th in her class of 317, Griner is a member of the National Honor Society and the National Science Honor Society. Griner will begin her studies at Purdue University this fall to become a biomedical engineer with the hope of creating new medicines and medical technology.

EMI Music Marketing Scholarship

Curran graduated first in his class of more than 300. He was also on the varsity cross country team and worked at a local theatre. The top priority in Curran’s life is his religion and his church. His college plans include attending Oklahoma Christian University and studying for a career in youth ministry.

Butler possesses an excellent academic and extra-curricular record. She was captain of the cheerleaders and a member of the National Honor Society, Academic Excellence and French Club. She plans to attend Ball State University, where she will study medical imaging technology.

Herman served as sports and design editor of her school’s yearbook and was a member of the National Honor Society. She was involved in many community service activities. Brittany possesses a great academic love of math and chemistry. She plans a career in pharmacy and will study at Butler University.

NARM Outstanding Achievement Scholarship

McKinney attends the University of Southern Indiana, where she is studying elementary education. She has qualified to be a University Peer Tutor, which means she mentors new tutors and provides support for them. A learning specialist at the university describes her as a role model for others who displays her character through her words and actions.

NARM Outstanding Achievement Scholarship

Rapsard is an outstanding student and an accomplished Irish step dancer who has achieved the highest level available. Rapsard plans to study speech-language pathology at the State University of New York, and has already completed an internship in this area.

NARM Outstanding Achievement Scholarship

Romanowski attends Siena College and will receive a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy with a Certificate in Pre-Law in June 2010. She hopes to attend law school at Fordham University, NYU or Pace University. She is currently participating in a summer internship where she is engaged in legal research and writing.

Wheeler is an honor roll student, a contributing member of the National Honor Society, and a member of the softball team, earning the Coach’s Award for best offensive player. Wheeler will begin studies in biology and pre-physical therapy at East Mississippi Community College.”

Nielsen SoundScan Outstanding Achievement Scholarship

Sherek will receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of North Texas in the spring of 2010. She will begin applying to law school in the fall and hopes to practice criminal law and become a prosecutor or public defender.
